Easy Gardening Jobs for Autumn & Winter

The spring and summer of 2025 was “blink and you’ll miss it” and it is now time to begin thinking about preparing your outdoors for its autumn and winter hiatus. We have put together a brief list of simple but useful gardening jobs to help your outdoors stay in good shape over the cooler months and ready for spring.

Store Your Furniture

Since garden furniture is a long-lasting investment, it is important to keep it stored effectively when not in use to ensure that you get several years of use out of it. One a dry day, give your outdoor table, chairs and cushions a once-over and stow it away in your shed or garage, or if you don’t have space inside a building to store in, a good quality furniture cover is a suitable alternative.

Check Your Fencing & Garden Structures

Storms wreak havoc over the autumn and winter months every year, which makes now the perfect time to check that your outdoor structures are safe and secure. Whether that means checking that your fencing can withstand windy weather or if it needs replacing, ensuring that your arbours or arches are secured to the ground correctly, or checking that your shed is in adequate condition. By checking this now, you will have the extra peace of mind that your structures are secure and that you will have one less job to do come spring.

Tidy The Garden

Possibly the simplest task on this list. Ensuring that the garden is neat and tidy ahead of the winter months will keep your outdoor essentials secure and in pristine condition. You may even find that you’re running out of storage space, and by tidying up now, you will have time to act and purchase a new storage solution before the cold weather makes tidying outside an unpleasant task.

Plant Your Spring Flowering Bulbs

Autumn is the ideal time to plant the bulbs for your spring flowering plants. Daffodils, Crocus, Hyacinths and even Tulips can be planted from October to December and will provide an uplifting first sign of spring when they begin to shoot through your flower beds.

With this simple list of outdoor jobs ticked off the list, you will be able to relax in the warmth of the indoors over autumn and winter knowing that your garden is neat, tidy and secure.
